Grants available for improving your home.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could receive funds from the government to improve or repair your home? Believe it or not there are real home improvement grant programs from different federal, states housing agencies. The Federal HUD and States Housing authorities are the biggest. You will have to check with your state housing authority to see. Programs to assist with making your home safe and energy efficient are offered by most State housing agencies. In some cases they even pay for the cost in case of emergency needs.

Whether you contact your local HUD office, local housing community non-profits or state home authority, they will be able to supply you with the information that you need. They will be able to tell you if there are grant programs available in your state and/or community, as well as if the project you are wanting to begin falls within the guidelines of the existing home grants programs.

You will also most probably need to provide you with some guidelines on how to manage your home improvement projects.

Grants for home improvement can cover projects like…

• The exterior of your home, as far as improving and putting back to today’s construction standards. This can include doors, windows, roof and siding, improving water supplies, sewage, ramps and bars for handicapped, etc.
• Interior improvement for usability for handicapped people, fixing your roof or siding if there is major problems or there is an issue with security or health. If your water system or electric system is not functional.
• If you are looking to turn a property into a low income housing. These are generally HUD programs. They usually cover most items plus financial aid sometimes like mortgage assurance and subsidized mortgage rates. These are generally projects that are started by an individual for profit or non profits.

Home theaters

In today’s world, more and more people are taking hold of the idea of home theaters. No one wants to sit in the living room and watch TV the old fashion way. You don’t have to be an expert in electronics in order to have the best home theater. One big thing that you will have to consider is if you will be using an existing room or if you will be adding a room.

Building a new room will allow you to make it exactly like you want it, it is the more expensive option. Using an existing room saves you money but it means you have to work with what you already have. Once you have chosen the route you will go, you will have to pick out the design that you would like to have.

First things first; you will want to start by drawing a sketch of what you would like the room to look like. If you are not exactly sure what you are looking for, it is always a good idea to look through magazines.

Once you get that step completed, you will want to make another drawing more detailed than the last. This drawing will include the kind of seating that you would like to have in the room, speakers, wiring and lighting, just to name a few of the things you will need to consider.

You need to consider the number of seats you have versus how much floor space you will have in the room. The placement of your seats will also help in determining where you will want to place the speakers. It has been advised that high backed seats add height, which absorbs some of the sound. As for recliners, they allow for a reposition of the viewer and will change the sounds. Both of these types of seating can take away from the sounds of the theater room, however, many people are willing to overlook that in place of comfort.

If you decide to hire a professional to do the work then all you have to do is give them your drawings. However, if you are opting to do it yourself, here are some things that you need to consider.

1. The acoustics in the room should be considered when you are talking acoustics. If you are adding on a room, the best way to take care of this problem is to be sure that the walls are different lengths. This could, however, become an issue when you decide to sell your home. However, this may be a bit of an issue when it comes time to sell your home. Or, if you decide to make the walls even, then one thing you can consider is covering the walls with material as well as the floor. The other option, for those of you who have or just like walls of even lengths, is to cover your walls and floor with material.

2. Home theaters have lots of wires associated with them and you don’t want to have them running across your floor. If you are building a new room, then the wiring can be put into the new walls and flooring. Make sure you hook up and test everything before you seal the wires up, as it will be hard to get to them later. Using tubing is a great way to camouflage the wires as well. Another option is to run the wiring underneath the carpeting.

3. Refrain from any lighting that is to bright and be sure to go with a room that has only a few or no windows. Basements are a great choice for your home theater. Also, be sure to pick a room that has the least amout of noises.

4. Due to the fact that electronics can build up heat and can hinder their performance, you should consider installing shelves or cabines to hold your equipment.

Though it may be something that you would never consider, break that train of thought and consider decorating your theater room with Hollywood stuff or something meaningful to you. Now, sit back, get your popcorn ready and enjoy yourself!

Vinyl and Wood Siding Maintenance and Repair

Most siding requires very little maintenance since it is designed to be out in the elements, have trees and bushes brush up against it, and the occasional baseball or football thrown on it. However, no matter what type of siding is on your home, there are some methods to keep your siding in good shape.

Vinyl Siding Upkeep

Vinyl siding is designed to be left alone, but if a piece of siding happens to come loose, you need to fix it soon. If it is allowed to flap in the wind, get bent, or curved into a different shape then it won’t go back on and will need to be replaced.

It is a good idea to have your vinyl siding power washed either before or after summer. Spiders and other insects like to live in the small ledges made in the siding stair-steps. Pressure washing will remove most of these, though it is a good idea to run a broom over as much of it as you can. Also, your siding will just get dirty from blowing wind and the elements and a good washing once a year with make a difference you won’t believe.

Wood Siding Maintenance

Wood siding needs to be treated every 4-6 years depending on how fierce the elements are in your area. In the mountain states where the sun and snow can be particularly vicious, you might need to have your wood siding treated more often, and possibly less often in temperate climates.

The good thing, part of the process of treating involves pressure washing the siding and washing the windows after, which can take care of a few things for you.

Wood Siding Repair

Cracks and holes in your wood siding will allow moisture and pests to get in. You should always be sure the underlying problem is fixed before you repair the siding. Otherwise the problem may crop up again later. Repair methods vary depending on the type of siding you have, but most are fairly easy to fix. Renailing loose sheathing, replacing rotted elements and patching any holes or gaps on the underlying surface will help in maintaining your siding after it is repaired. If your home has multiple stories (levels), a siding contractor may need to have special equipment to get to the taller areas of your home. Remember, siding can be heavy and awkward to work with, so they may not be able to carry it up ladders. It’s also important to try to pinpoint the nature of the problem before repairs begin. For example, look for obvious clues, such as overgrown tree roots or damaged gutters that let water drain onto masonry surfaces. Also check the slope of the surrounding landscape to see if it needs to be regraded to direct water away from the foundation. Removing siding completely can be a dirty and difficult job requiring specialized equipment and protective gear. It’s best to leave this job to a siding professional.
