Stairs

Natural hardwood stairs are as beautiful as they come. If you’re a home owner who has the funding to remodel or upgrade your stairs, see the tread list below.

Stair Treads

If you’re like the rest of us, and are trying to figure out the fastest and cheapest way to give those old stairs a new look or revive them. Here are a few suggestions:

Having recently done our stairs, we found that we had about three choices:
1. Buy new treads and hand rails
2. Sand down the old stairs and then restain and seal
3. notch 1/4 inch groves at the end of tread, then cut 1/4 hardwood paneling, covering the old wood.

We opted for choice number 2, but number 3 to me, seemed far easier and I didn’t have to concern myself with pits in the wood, deep paint stuck in grooves, or the nasty sanding involved.

Fortunately, there are some really good paint thinners on the market, which made removing the four layers of paint from the wood, fairly simple. To cover the imperfections in the treads, we covered it with a runner going down the center of the stairs.

Before you decide just how you want to tackle remodeling your stairs, make sure you look at all the options.
